Gregory Downer’s paintings begin with the mutable light and landscape surrounding his studio in Tyler Hill, Pennsylvania. His landscapes and skyscapes hold moments in transition: shadow moving toward illumination, weather gathering, and the atmosphere poised on the verge of change.
Rather than describing nature literally, Downer uses color, tonal contrast, and shifting fields of light to create a sense of imminence—the charged interval before something fully reveals itself. His lifelong engagement with music, particularly opera, informs the paintings’ rhythm, theatricality, and lyricism. Light becomes both subject and structure, carrying the work between observation and memory, stillness and drama.
Biography
Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Gregory Downer grew up in Florham Park, New Jersey, and studied at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia and at Tyler Abroad in Rome, Italy (BFA). Gregory was the Art Director of Opera News magazine, published by the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Inc., from 1975 to 2015 under five different editors-in-chief. Responsible for the magazine’s design evolution, he produced photo sessions of all the leading opera performers of the last 40 years and contributed his own photography, most notably for special travel issues of European opera capitals and festivals.
His paintings and illustrations were featured on many of the magazine’s covers. Greg also designed Ballet News magazine for the Guild from 1979 to 1986 and the Metropolitan Opera Season Book until 2006. His work earned Opera News graphic-arts industry recognition from Art Direction magazine, the Print magazine Regional Design Annual, and Graphis magazine.
Gregory’s design work has extended to promotional material for The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, Arkadia Records, Omnitone Records, The Licia Albanese Foundation, The Gerda Lissner Foundation and The Abby Whiteside Foundation/Sophia Rosoff Series at Weill Hall/Carnegie Hall.
In 2018, Gregory designed and mounted an 18-month exhibition for the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in downtown Manhattan titled “Malibran at the Basilica--1826,” a timeline of famed Spanish soprano Maria Malibran and her 19th-century triumph in New York. The exhibit appeared in a PBS special with Martin Scorsese and in a season finale of the series Blue Bloods with Tom Selleck.
Gregory Downer’s paintings are about LIGHT—landscapes and skyscapes express the theatricality of shadow-darkness moving into the light—and liminality—the exciting mystery of something imminent. Gregory’s passion for music, and especially opera, informs his sensibility and affirms the lyricism imbued in his work. His paintings draw inspiration from nature and the environs of his studio in Tyler Hill, Pennsylvania. His work has been included in one-man exhibitions and in group shows in regional New York/New Jersey/Pennsylvania galleries and in private collections.
Most recently, the Union League Club of New York invited him to mount a one-man exhibit in March and April 2026 in the club gallery.
